In his latest short, Georges Schwizgebel directs our eye to the male-dominated world of painting, especially the way it has presented people of color. The two paintings addressed in the title are “Olympia” (1863) by Édouard Manet and “La blanche et la noire” (1913) by Félix Vallotton. Both of them depict—alongside the central female nude—a Black woman in a supporting role. Interwoven in both paintings are also several cross-references to the theme.
